Westwood High School in Austin, Texas is a 6A high school with an enrollment of 2,686 students in grades 9-12. The program is currently under the leadership of Joshua Thompson and Justin Anderson. The Orchestra program at WHS currently has 223 members, placed in five skills-based orchestras. WHS takes three full orchestras and five string orchestras to UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest, at which all ensembles have consistently earned Sweepstakes awards.
The Symphony Orchestra at Westwood is a perennial finalist in the Texas Music Educator Association (TMEA) Honor Orchestra Competition, which is one of the most competitive music competitions in the country. The Westwood Symphony has been selected as the TMEA Honor Orchestra four times: in 2000, 2006, and 2010 as the TMEA Honor Full Orchestra, and 2013 as the Honor String Orchestra. The Westwood Orchestra students traditionally are very successful at All-Region and All-State auditions, consistently placing more than 40 students annually into the Region 26 All-Region Orchestra, and often a dozen or more students into the Texas All-State Orchestras.
